FAQ ON PRESSED ALUMINIUM PLATES

1. What are vintage or retro number plates and who can use them in the UK?
Vintage or retro number plates are traditional-style registration plates designed to replicate the look of older plates. In the UK they’re typically fitted to vehicles registered before 1 January 1980 (40-year rolling rule) and are popular with classic car and motorcycle owners wanting a period-correct appearance.
2. Are black and silver number plates legal on all vehicles?
No. Black and silver number plates are only legal for vehicles registered before 1 January 1980 that qualify for “historic vehicle” status. They can be supplied as show plates for newer cars but not for road use.
3. Can pressed aluminium number plates be used on modern cars?
Yes. Pressed aluminium plates with white (front) and yellow (rear) reflective backgrounds are legal on vehicles of any age, as long as they meet DVLA standards. Only black and silver pressed plates are restricted to historic vehicles.
4. What is the difference between black and white number plates and black and silver number plates?
Black and white/yellow number plates are the current legal style for most vehicles — black characters on a white background at the front and black characters on a yellow background at the rear. Black and silver plates are the pre-1973 style with silver or white characters on a black background, legal only on historic vehicles.
5. Do pressed aluminium number plates last longer than acrylic plates?
Pressed aluminium number plates are extremely durable because the characters are physically stamped into the metal. They are more resistant to weathering and cracking than acrylic plates, making them ideal for both modern and classic vehicles.
6. Can I have my registration made as a pressed aluminium plate?
Yes. We offer pressed aluminium number plates in both modern reflective (white/yellow) styles for any vehicle, and black & silver styles for eligible historic vehicles. For newer vehicles we can also supply black & silver as show plates for off-road use.
7. How do I know if my classic car qualifies for black and silver vintage number plates?
If your vehicle is over 40 years old and registered as a “historic vehicle” with the DVLA, you can legally display black and silver vintage number plates. You can check your V5C logbook or the DVLA website to confirm eligibility.
8. Are retro number plates customisable with modern fonts or designs?
For road-legal plates, DVLA regulations must be followed on font, spacing and layout. However, we can make custom retro number plates or show plates with different fonts, borders or badges for display, exhibition or off-road use.
9. What are the benefits of choosing aluminium pressed number plates over standard plates?
Aluminium pressed plates offer a genuine period look, a tactile 3D feel, and greater durability than standard acrylic plates. They’re ideal for enhancing the authenticity of classic cars, motorcycles, and other vintage vehicles — and our reflective pressed white/yellow plates are fully road legal for all vehicles.
10. How do I order pressed aluminium plates online?
Simply use our online plate builder to enter your registration, choose your style (black & silver, reflective white/yellow pressed aluminium etc.) and upload proof of ownership if required. We’ll manufacture your plates and deliver them quickly anywhere in the UK.
